Juggling and Highflying! Training at Circus House

Updated: May 15, 2019

"Circus encourages you to be individual"

Molly Pemberton, Circus House Manchester

Art arguably doesn't get anymore unconventional than it does when it comes to the circus. Typically circus is considered a travelling company of acrobats, clowns, and other performing entertainers, displaying extraordinary athleticism and physical feats in a choreographed routine of stunts, dance and body manipulations. Circus affords the entertainer the opportunity to convey emotions through their routines and moments, and further, they express themselves through costume and make up.

CollectiveMCR was granted an exclusive opportunity to meet Manchesters very own

circus training school. The Circus House, located in Longsight, first opened its doors to Manchester locals in the early 2010s and has been a hit to many Mancunians since. Anyone looking to learn a new skill, keep up with fitness or just seeking a form of entertainment are welcome. We caught up with Sian, a Co-Director and a few students of the circus house to get the down low on how they use their bodies has a form of expressionism.

We met with Molly, a student turned trainer at The Circus House, as she undergoes an intense training regime in an attempt to build a career in the circus industry. Check out this Awesome interview with Molly.

For Molly, circus training is an outlet to express individuality. Joe, a trapeze artist and fellow member of The Circus House adds, that circus training is a space where he can escape the troubles of everyday life. He describes his experience in performance as complete focus on the apparatus and movement of his body, momentarially leaving worries and stress aside. He also adds, that performance and and choreographed routines give him a chance to convey his emotions to the audience.

Co-Founder of the school, Sian Berry, describes the Circus House as a welcoming community of creatives from all walks of life. The school offers classes and programmes for all ages and additional all skill levels. The school promotes an environment of students who help each other and learn from each other. Sian state, "I think that it is a really healthy way to be. It's healthy to share ideas, it's healthy to share struggles. If a student is finding a physical skill difficult, for instance handstands, talking about it quite often helps people to learn to talk about other struggles they might be experiencing in their lives".

Students at the Circus House benefit from real life experience, having the opportunity to perform for audiences across Manchester. The Circus House has preformed outside Albert Hall in the city centre for Manchester Day, as well as regularly hosting events to showcase the skills and abilities of the students. The schools next event Anna of the Jungle takes place in Hulme on May 17 & 18th. Tickets are available from as little as £3.25 and can be purchased here.
