Updated: May 15, 2019

“The most powerful thing about filmmaking, is making a connection with the audience”

Ricky Wong, director of ‘Love, Unemployed’.

Love Unemployed is a feature film created by Manchester based, independent filmmaker, Rick Wong. For Ricky, a graduate in art and illustration, the production of his first feature film, ‘Love, Unemployed’, has been a labour of love and passion for filmmaking. The film first entered production, from its concept in 2012, to its completion in 2018. Ricky boasts, “the production has been long and has been hard work, but worth every moment”. Coming from a background in illustration, Ricky created storyboard drawings of each frame of the film in his pre-production planning. He concluded the experience was rewarding, "shooting each scene physically brought my drawings to life".

Check out our interview with Ricky about his experience.

The synopsis of the film is, a retired and disgruntled Cupid meets a peculiar mute girl who carries a precious camera with her on a journey across England in search of a doctor.

As of Winter 2018, the film has been finalised in post-production editing and is ready for its premier in Manchester, as well as anticipated film festival entries across the UK.

Ricky describes ‘Love, Unemployed’ as an emotional rollercoaster ride. Check out the trailer bellow.

Ricky describes filmmaking as a powerful art form, allowing the creator to tell a story and convey emotions through its various of components. For Ricky, a rewarding experience is watching how people react to his film. He adds, "The end product it is the culmination of years of hard work, not just by the director, but by a the entire cast and crew who contributed their time, energy and passion, working together in unison to produce a unique creation.

In modern society, Filmmaking is an art form which is easily accessible through modern technology. Mobile devices provide its users with high-end digital video cameras and editing software, allowing users the potential to produce creative digital video and further, the opportunity to instantly distribute creations via social media. Ricky believes the availability of such software and hardware is a valuable tool for all filmmakers especially those aspiring to get into the industry. He advises new film makers to use every facility at their disposal to develop skills and hone in their talents. He adds, mirroring his own experience, drawing out scenes is an additional skill allowing new filmmakers to plan their shots, resulting in a more thoroughly thought out, developed and professional end product.
